Multi-scale modelling of structural concrete is an advanced computational and theoretical approach aimed at capturing the complex behaviour of concrete by linking phenomena occurring at different length and time scales. Concrete, as a heterogeneous and composite material, exhibits behaviour that is governed by interactions between its constituents—cement paste, aggregates, and pores—across microscopic (e.g., microcracking, hydration), mesoscopic (e.g., interface zones, aggregate distribution), and macroscopic (e.g., structural response, load-bearing capacity) levels. Multi-scale models aim to bridge these scales through hierarchical or concurrent coupling, allowing material properties at a smaller scale to inform or predict behaviour at higher structural levels.
