Był to trzeci album zespołu we własnej wytwórni Grateful Dead Records i trzeci album studyjny z rzędu. Blues for Allah był najwyżej notowanym albumem grupy aż do albumu In the Dark z 1987 roku, osiągając 12. miejsce podczas trzynastotygodniowego pobytu na liście Billboard Album Chart.
