Daisy Miller is a novella by Henry James, first published in The Cornhill Magazine in 1878 and issued in book form in 1879. It tells the story of a young American woman, Annie “Daisy” Miller, whose independent behavior and casual sociability challenge the rigid social expectations of the expatriate communities she encounters in Europe. The narrative follows Daisy’s interactions with Frederick Winterbourne, an American living abroad, beginning with their meeting in the Swiss resort town of Vevey and continuing through their encounters in Rome.
